Evan Mobley Signs Five-Year, $224 Million Contract With Cavaliers

Evan Mobley has finally signed his rookie extension with the Cavaliers , re-signing with the franchise for five years, $224 million, according to Adrian Wojnarowski. Woj added that the deal could be worth $269 million by the end of the contract. The Cavs are making moves to lock their key players down this year.

Mobley entered the NBA in 2021 when he was selected by the Cavaliers as the third overall pick in the draft. Since then, he has proven to be one of the best young big men in the NBA and can play high-level defense against any opposition on the court. Mobley's presence on the court has been a big part of the Cavaliers becoming a regular playoff team once again.

Mobley's extension for the Cavs is the second high-profile move the Cavaliers have made to secure their roster. They started the summer by surprisingly re-signing Donovan Mitchell , after many in the NBA expected him to leave in free agency, to a three-year, $150.3 million contract .

The Cavaliers are making an active effort to secure the core pieces of their roster. And so far, they've identified Mitchell and Mobley as the two key pieces. Perhaps the rest of the roster could be considered expendable, which opens the doors for the franchise to pull off some moves to improve the team.

Mobley has had a strong career so far. Since joining the NBA. He made the All-Rookie first team in his first season with the Cavs. In 2023, Mobley took a massive leap as a defender, making the NBA All-Defensive first team, and finishing third in the race for Defensive Player of the Year that same year.

Mobley Improving All Aspects Of His Game

Donovan Mitchell was the first teammate of his to congratulate Mobley on social media, joking that he will not be paying for anything while they're together now that the Cavaliers have offered him such a big money deal.

"PAY THE MAN!! I'M NOT PAYING FOR NOTHIN NO MORE CONGRATS BROTHA Evan Mobley!"

Mobley had a strong season last year, averaging 15.7 points, 9.4 rebounds, and 3.2 assists. The Cavaliers would make their deepest playoff run last year with Mobley on the court, as they would push the Celtics to six games in the second round of the NBA Playoffs.

The Cavaliers have been making improvements year-on-year in the playoffs, with each performance being better than the previous year. In 2022, they were eliminated in the play-in tournament, in 2023 they were knocked out by the Knicks in the first round, and this year, they were eliminated by the Celtics in the second round.

The Cavaliers haven't really made any big moves that make them contenders. They made a coaching change this year, firing J.B. Bickerstaff in favor of former Nets head coach Kenny Atkinson. The Cavs are hoping he can continue the yearly playoff improvement trend that Bickerstaff started.

Mobley will presumably be a key piece for Atkinson's team, considering the money he was paid, and his performances over the last few years.
