Cleveland Browns 2024 Training Camp Preview
Last season, the Cleveland Browns finished the year second in the AFC North after rattling seven wins in their last ten games. Head coach Kevan Stefanski wants the best version of Quarterback Deshaun Watson this year, but can fans be confident they are going to get that? It has been a tumultuous tenure for Waston in Cleveland after being traded , but can he and the team turn it around in 2024? We look into that, position battles, and much more in the Browns training camp preview!
Three Position Battles To Watch:
Defensive Tackle: Dalvin Tomlinson, Shelby Harris, Quinton Jefferson, Maurice Hurst II, Siani Ika, Michael Hall Jr.
The Browns have as much beef as you can ask for on the Defensive line heading into training camp in 2024. Dalvin Tomlinson and Shelby Harris are going to be the presumed starters heading into the season as they are the most experienced in the bunch at the highest level of production, but rookie Michael Hall Jr. (draft profile here ) and second-year man Siani Ika are going to push the vets for playing time. This group should be one of the strengths of a very good Cleveland defense.
Right Tackle: Jack Conklin, Dawand Jones
The smart money is going to be on Jack Conklin if he comes into the Browns training camp healthy. Last season, he suffered a brutal knee injury in September, costing him the entire 2023 season. This is the same player who missed a ton of time in 2022 to a severe knee injury in his other knee. This is surely going to be a concern for Cleveland, so I expect Dawand Jones to get the lion’s share of the first-team snaps early this year. Jones, who’s coming off his own season-ending injury last year, looked impressive in his starts last season.
No. 3 Wide Receiver: Jerry Jeudy, Cedric Tillman, David Bell, Jamari Thrash
Outside of Amari Cooper, this is a lackluster Wide Receiver group. The Browns traded for underachieving Jerry Jeudy out of Denver, then turned around and gave him a huge extension , so naturally, he *should* be the option. However, it has to be talked about how much of a bust he has been in the NFL after being selected 15th overall in the 2020 draft. He totaled 211 receptions for 3,053 yards and just 11 touchdowns in 57 career games.
Cedric Tillman is not going to make life easy for Jeudy in terms of getting that WR2 spot, but I believe a name to watch out for is Jamari Thrash. His draft profile told us he would bring speed to any offense he joins, and this group needed it in spades. He could be someone who steals a ton of targets this season.
I understand it doesn’t feel right to say a quarterback who has finished as a top-five fantasy player is a breakout candidate. However, since going to Cleveland, Watson has not played well at all. I know there was the suspensions and the injuries , but this will be his first training camp for the Browns where there are no issues going on. But if Watson can find that form he had in Houston, even just a little bit of it, we will see a massive shift in his play and Cleveland will become a serious contender in the AFC.
Rookie To Watch: Jamari Thrash
I was leaning toward Zak Zinter for this pick, but both guard positions for the Browns are locked down, so barring injury we may not see a ton from him this season. But Thrash on the other hand, as I mentioned above, has an opportunity to carve out a role in this offense. There was a noticeable lack of breakaway speed in the receiver group last season, and if Thrash can make the splash plays early in the Browns training camp, he should get the chance to do it in games this season.
Fantasy Sleeper: Nick Chubb
Can we trust the recovery from Nick Chubb’s injury ? That’s the reason question here.
This is another scenario where we are highlighting a player to potentially be someone to watch, even though they have been at the top of the fantasy rankings before. But that injury is no joke, and he is likely going to miss the start of the season as well. But if he can hit the field early and show that he hasn’t lost a step, this has the makings of a league winner in 2024 if you can grab him late enough in your drafts.
