Browns’ Kevin Stefanski makes big decision for the team that will have an impact on their 2024 NFL season

The Cleveland Browns have already put to bed one big storyline that was worth following through training camp.

This past offseason, the Browns opted to let go of former offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt and to hire Ken Dorsey to be the new one. With that happening, the possibility of Kevin Stefanski giving up play-calling was legit.

Stefanski put the topic to rest on Thursday at the first training camp practice from the Greenbrier in West Virginia.

“I’m going to call plays this year. We’ll continue to be an operation that works together,” Stefanski said on Thursday. “I want to get that out of the way, I know everybody is interested. And any decision I make for our football team, I take a lot of information in.”

Stefanski has called the plays for the Browns on offense since he took over as the head coach in 2020. Last season may have been his best performance yet with the offense. The defense was elite but the offense still had to score points and they were able to do that. Deshaun Watson essentially played in just five games and the Browns lost their identity in running back Nick Chubb in Week 2. When you factor in that the Browns lost their top three offensive tackles, it shows it was a lot to deal with.

Still, the Browns won 11 games and reached the playoffs for the second time in four years. Cleveland had to start a game with five different quarterbacks and won a game with four of them. The ideal scenario for the 2024 season is that Cleveland can be a much healthier team.

Even with Dorsey not calling plays, he still will have a ton of day in the offense. Cleveland will implement a bunch of new concepts that he brings and he’ll have an impact. One of the biggest things in the NFL is being willing to change and that means evolving as an offense too. We will see new things from the offense in 2024 at times that we have not seen yet.

No matter who is calling plays, the goal is still to get Watson to be the best player that he can be for the team . In two seasons with Cleveland, Watson has played in just 12 games and has not been able to live up to the trade that the Browns made. There is still time to right the ship and Cleveland hopes 2024 is the year that it can happen.

We now have one big storyline over with for the Browns already and we’re a day into practices. What’s next?
