As the Cleveland Browns began training camp on Thursday at the Greenbrier in West Virginia, it was made known that a couple of starters on the defense have injuries that surgery will be required.
Head coach Kevin Stefanski revealed that defensive tackle Dalvin Tomlinson has a knee injury that will require a scope being done and that cornerback Greg Newsome II will have surgery on a hamstring injury.
The good news is that both players have a chance to be back for Week 1 against the Dallas Cowboys at home.
“Greg Newsome had surgery on his hamstring, so he’ll be out, hopefully have him back for week one but I’ll have more of an update as we get closer,” Stefanski told the media on Thursday. “Dalvin Tomlinson is having surgery tomorrow, having a scope on his knee. Same idea, we’ll update you guys as we get more information on those injuries and those are all, like we’ve always talked about injuries, we’ll continue to just work through it.”
Tomlinson is the big worry since he is the leader in the defensive tackle room. The veteran didn’t have the strongest of seasons last year with 28 tackles and three sacks but is someone the Browns expect to step up in 2024 for the defense . If Tomlinson is going to miss time, it means more opportunity for players like Maurice Hurst, Quinton Jefferson, Shelby Harris, Siaki Ika, and rookie Mike Hall Jr.
Newsome has missed at least two games in each of his three seasons so far in the NFL. Last season, Newsome had his first two career interceptions and one went for a touchdown. He is a high-energy player that his peers feed off of and his presence is felt when he’s on the field . Second-year player Cam Mitchell and rookie Myles Harden will get more chances with Newsome out.
There is well over a month until the regular season starts, so there will be time for these guys to get right. If they aren’t, the Browns have as much experience as anyone needing players to step up.
