Money, overall health and the economy are the top reasons for stress anywhere, including Ohio.

A recent report says that there are at least five Ohio cities that made the list of the most stressed cities in the United States.

Personal finance site WalletHub gathered data from over 180 cities, using information such as average weekly work hours, unemployment rates, and divorce and suicide rates to determine which cities are feeling stress the most. The study found that Cleveland tops the list for the most stressed city in America.

The study examined 39 factors across four categories: work stress, financial stress, family stress, and health & safety stress. Here's how the other Ohio cities rank.

Cleveland tops the list as the most stressed city in America

The study determined that Cleveland residents experience the most stress of any city in the U.S. Cleveland has the lowest median household income in the country, the second-highest separation and divorce rate in the country, and one of the highest violent crime rates in the country, according to WalletHub.

Cleveland is the most stressed, and Detroit and Baltimore follow closely behind.

Where do the other Ohio cities rank?

Out of nearly 200 cities evaluated, several other Ohio cities still fall within the top 70 of the most stressed cities. Here's how the other cities stack up:

    • No. 1: Cleveland (No. 1 for most financial stress rank and No. 2 for health and safety stress)
    • No. 8: Akron (No. 6 for family stress rank and No. 8 for health and safety stress)
    • No. 23: Cincinnati (ranked No. 31 for most financial stress)
    • No. 26: Toledo (No. 19 for most financial stress)
    • No. 67: Columbus (ranked No. 46 for health and safety stress)

"Where you live can play a big role in how stressed you are," said WalletHub analyst Cassandra Happe. She explained that while there are factors outside one's control (family, friends, employers), it's important to consider how a city can cause strain on your mental health. "Cities with high crime rates, weak economies, less effective public health and congested transportation systems naturally lead to elevated stress levels for residents," Happe added.
