D'Onta Foreman hasn't yet played a snap for the Browns, but he is already dealing with a potentially serious injury.

The 28-year-old running back sustained what the team described as "a direct blow to the head" during Cleveland's practice Thursday. He was participating in a punting drill when the injury occurred.

Foreman had to be taken off the field on a backboard as a result of the injury. He was later transported to a hospital in Roanoke, Virginia, by helicopter for further medical evaluation. The Browns are holding their training camp at the Greenbrier in West Virginia.

Foreman "had movement in all his extremities" before he was carted off the field on a backboard, the Browns said in a statement Thursday. But the veteran running back was dealing with neck pain after he took a blow to the head during Thursday's practice, per the statement.

"The Browns athletic training staff deployed their standard emergency action procedures to immobilize Foreman," the Browns said in a statement . "He was taken to an ambulance and is being transported via helicopter to a Medical Center in Roanoke, VA to undergo further medical evaluation."

The Browns said updates on Foreman's condition "will be provided as more information is received."

Foreman signed with the Browns in the offseason to provide depth behind star running back Nick Chubb, who is returning from a significant knee injury suffered during the 2023 NFL season.

Foreman played with the Bears in 2023 and racked up 425 yards and four touchdowns on 109 carries across nine games. He shared carries with Khalil Herbert and Roschon Johnson and was expected to push Jerome Ford for Cleveland's backup job — and potential early-season starter — behind Chubb.

The Browns continued practicing after Foreman's injury, but coaches and players alike took a knee to offer prayers to Foreman after his injury, per Cleveland.com's Mary Kay Cabot.
