First turtle nests hatch on Anna Maria Island as record number of nests identified
SARASOTA, Fla. (WWSB) - The Anna Maria Island Turtle Watch has documented a record number of nests this season, beating the total from 2019. Turtle Watch has been monitoring sea turtle nests on Anna Maria Island since 1983. As of July 2, 546 nests have been found this season, which is the most ever recorded, surpassing the previous highest total of 543 set in 2019.

Elementary school teacher sentenced in fatal Greenacres-area vehicle crash
A suburban Lake Worth Beach woman was sentenced to three years in prison this week for a 2022 vehicle crash that killed a man near Greenacres. Elizabeth Owens, 27, learned her fate on Monday, July 1, during a hearing before Circuit Judge Jeffrey Gillen at the Palm Beach County Courthouse. She pleaded guilty in March to vehicular homicide in a Dec. 21, 2022 two-car collision that killed 68-year-old Willie Swoope. Her plea was entered without an offer from the state.

Building where Parkland school shooting happened fully torn down
PARKLAND, Fla. (CBS12) — After more than six years, the site in Parkland where 17 people lost their lives to a school shooter has been fully demolished. Crews have completed tearing down the 1200 building on the campus of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.
