On a muggy Memorial Day, Monday, May 27, dozens and dozens of community members gathered at Clifton Cemetery to honor the brave men and women who sacrificed their lives for the nation.

The ceremony, hosted by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #8553, featured heartfelt speeches, prayers, and tributes to veterans and their families.

Ricky Richards, the outgoing commander of the VFW Post, welcomed attendees and introduced Wil Murdock as the incoming commander.

Richards expressed his gratitude for the support he received during his tenure and highlighted the new generation of veterans stepping into leadership roles.

'It's a testimony to how strongly you feel about your veterans,' Richards said, acknowledging the oppressive humidity and the community's dedication.

The ceremony began with an invocation by VFW chaplain Stephen Cariotis. His prayer honored the nation's fallen warriors and their families, invoking gratitude for their sacrifices and the hope of resurrection and reunion.

The crowd then pledged allegiance to the flag before Richards introduced a special guest, State Senator Brian Birdwell, who was present to honor the veterans.

The keynote address was delivered by Sam Cryan, a decorated Vietnam War veteran. Cryan shared his emotional journey, including being shot down and injured during the war, and his subsequent recovery and career. His speech, rich with personal anecdotes and reflections, moved many in the audience.

'I always have a hard time when I speak before Gold Star families,' Cryan admitted, his voice breaking with emotion as he recounted his experiences and the sacrifices of his comrades.

Cryan’s story underscored the bravery and camaraderie of military service, highlighting the bonds formed during the most challenging times. He paid tribute to fellow veterans and their families, emphasizing the importance of remembering their contributions and sacrifices.

Following Cryan's speech, the ceremony continued with 21-gun salute and the playing of Taps, a solemn reminder of the day’s significance. The event concluded with a closing prayer by Cariotis, who asked for divine guidance and strength for the nation and its people.

Attendees were invited to a complimentary hamburger lunch at the American Legion dining hall, providing an opportunity to continue the fellowship in a cooler setting.

Richards encouraged everyone to join the afternoon movie screenings sponsored by the VFW at the local theater, featuring '12 Strong' and 'Memphis Belle,' two films celebrating military heroism.

Additionally, Richards introduced a new flag deposit box for the proper disposal of worn flags, emphasizing the community's ongoing commitment to honoring national symbols with respect.

The box is a refurbished newspaper vending machine donated by the Clifton Record / Meridian Tribune and decorated by local artist Megan Major of 219 Artisan Workshop in Clifton.

The ceremony was a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by veterans and their families, and a celebration of the enduring spirit of those who served.

The Memorial Day event at Clifton Cemetery not only honored the past but also inspired a renewed commitment to support and remember those who have served.

Outgoing VFW Post #8553 Commander Ricky Richards introduced the new Post Commander Will Murdoch to the group gathered for the Memorial Day cermeony at Clifton Cemetery on Monday, May 27, 2024.

Folks can now deposit their worn flags into a newly refurbished newspaper vending machine box outside the Veterans of Foreign Wars / American Legion post in Clifton. The box was donated by the Clifton Record / Meridian Tribune and decorated by Megan Major of 219 Artisan Workshop in Clifton.
