There is an alga bloom that runs from the west of Lake Erie, which sucks out the oxygen and makes it almost impossible for wildlife to live in. Much is caused by the fertilizer that runs into the lake from rivers and, before that, farms.

A new study shows that the problem has become permanent. According to Semafor, “Toxic PFAS “forever chemicals” are ubiquitous in the Great Lakes basin’s air, rain, atmosphere and water, new peer-reviewed research shows. The first-of-its-kind, comprehensive picture of PFAS levels for the basin, which holds nearly 95% of the nation’s freshwater, also reveals that precipitation is probably a major contributor to the lakes’ contamination.”

So first, it comes from the rivers and then from the skies.

This is yet another example of how pollution problems become permanent and irreversible. It has happened across the world, from Phoenix to India. Scientists and the government may slightly improve insolvable problems like this, but perhaps those efforts for things that can be prevented or changed.
