Lock Haven, Pa. — After being shot and tied to a tree, Bunni, a pit bull terrier mix, has found a new lease on life and a forever family.

In the late spring of 2023, Brad and Whitney made the heartbreaking decision to put their dog, Sammy, down. While they weren’t ready for another dog, somehow Bunni found a way into their hearts — and their home — after the Clinton County SPCA posted that she was up for adoption on Facebook.

“Brad came home one day and said he saw this really cute dog on Facebook,” Whitney said.

With Brad’s prompting, the two went to meet the dog, who the SPCA called "Lucky," along with her foster parents at a park.

“The moment I saw her, I knew she was going to be a part of our family.” Whitney said.

Not only had Brad and Whitney felt that they were missing something in their family, but Lucky was looking for her own family.

At the end of January 2023, Lucky had been found on the side of the road tied to a tree . SPCA workers had believed she was hit by a car. After taking her to Rosebird Veterinary and getting her x-rayed, they discovered the dog had been shot multiple times by her previous owner. Due to the gunshot wounds, her left front leg had to be amputated.

“I saw it all over Facebook when the news had come out about the abuse,” Brad said. “Once I saw she was up for adoption, I knew we had to see her.”

Once the couple met the resilient pup, they knew she was coming home with them. They wanted her to have a fresh start, beginning with a new name: Bunni.

“Bunni was really the only name we both could agree on,” Whitney said with a laugh. “But it also fits her so well. She loves running after the rabbits in our yard, and with her missing a leg, she also hops like one.”

The process of adopting Bunni was quite easy for the couple. The veterinarian of Brad and Whitney’s first dog, Sammy, was fostering Bunni.

“Our vet knew what we had just been through with Sammy,” Brad said. “He and his wife knew we would be perfect for her.”

While fostering Bunni, Dr. Andrew VanGorder took her to the Rosebird office to see the other dogs. VanGorder told the couple how Bunni would sit in the kennels by the other dogs and mentioned how the couple's previous dog, Sammy, and Bunni had probably met each other in the vet office.

“When we met our vet and he told us he took Bunni into the office, he mentioned that the two had met before we had to put Sammy down,” Whitney said. “They had kennels next to each other.”

It has been over a year since the couple adopted Bunni and they learning more about her personality every day.

“She loves to sit on the edge of our yard and just stare into the woods,” Whitney said. “She also is so cute when she gets the zoomies. Her missing leg does not prevent her from doing what every other dog does.”

The couple described Bunni’s love for car rides and how she’s the perfect addition to their family.

“If I’m getting in my truck and I’m not going to work, she’s tagging along,” Brad said. “She loves going anywhere with us.” Brad and Whitney highlighted Bunni’s other quirks, including how she doesn’t bark and how much she loves to cuddle.

“I truly cannot imagine our lives without Bunni,” the couple said. “We needed her just as much as she needed us.”
