PREP BASEBALL: Clinton opens postseason play with 6-3 win over Dodgeland/Hustisford

CLINTON — The Clinton baseball team started the playoffs in a similar way to how it ended the regular season: hot.

The sixth-seeded Cougars, who came into Thursday as winners of six of their past seven games, poured on all six of their runs in the first two innings as they rolled No. 1 Dodgeland/Hustisford 6-3 in a WIAA Division 3 regional opener.

Collin Gill had an RBI single in the first inning before Logan Hendricks smacked a two-run single in the second while Tyler Moe added a two-run double to give Clinton (13-7) an early 6-0 lead.

Dodgeland/Hustisford (8-13) scored three runs in the sixth, but starter Tim Arnold finished the complete game by working around a two-out triple in the seventh. He allowed three runs (two earned) on five hits with five strikeouts.

Bryce Phillips, Gill and Moe had two hits for the Cougars, who racked up 11. They next travel to face No. 3 Lomira on Tuesday.

    • HONONEGAH 4, HARLEM 1: In Rockton, Ian Blankenship threw seven stellar innings for the third-seeded Indians as they edged the NIC-10 rival Huskies in Thursday’s IHSA 4A regional semifinal.

Blankenship allowed an earned run in the third while allowing five hits and walking three with two strikeouts. Hononegah (24-6) scored two runs in the third and one in the second and fifth.

Drake Broege had an RBI double in the third and scored another runner on a groundout in the sixth. Evan Sayles went 2-for-3 with two runs while Jakob DeLeo and Logan Edward had two hits for the Indians, who outhit fifth-seeded Harlem (15-14) 8-5.

The Indians will play second-seeded Hampshire in the regional finals Saturday at 10 a.m. at Weber Field in Rockton.

    • BIG FOOT 8, MARTIN LUTHER 6: In Greendale, every time the No. 8 Spartans tried to rally, the No. 9 Chiefs answered with a run as they won their WIAA Division 2 regional opener on Thursday.

The Chiefs (8-14) went up 4-2 in the third and scored single runs in the final four frames. Martin Luther (10-13) scored two in the fourth and a run in both the sixth and seventh but could get no closer.

Carter Ries went 2-for-3 with three RBI, including an RBI single in the three-run third. Brady Wojcik also had two hits and a run-scoring single in the third while Will Wojcik, Jonah Martinez and Evan Henningfeld all had two hits in Big Foot’s 13-hit outing.

Big Foot will have a tall task awaiting Tuesday when it travels to play top-seeded New Berlin Eisenhower.

    • EDGERTON 5, BRODHEAD/JUDA 3: In Brodhead, a five-run third inning by the No. 10 Crimson Tide was too much for the No. 7 Cardinals, who fell in their WIAA D-2 regional opener.

Max Pinnow had a one-run single in the fourth and Tyrin Foster had an RBI single in the sixth but it wasn’t enough for Brodhead/Juda (13-12) to complete the comeback.

Clayton Elliott and Kohen Sawle added a single and Ryan Searls a double but Ethan Stengel, Donovan Hatch and Caleb Kittleson combined for the win from the mound for Edgerton (9-11).

The Crimson Tide had just three hits but drew eight walks. Clayton Elliott threw 4 2-3 two-hit innings of relief for Sam Searls.

    • MARSHALL 5, PARKVIEW 4: In Marshall, the No. 11 Vikings nearly pulled off the upset over the No. 6 Cardinals but ultimately fell in the WIAA D-3 regional opener.

Parkview (2-19) got a single and three-straight two-out walks to cut it to 5-4 before a strikeout ended it. Marshall had broken a three-all tie in the sixth by putting up a pair of runs.

Gehrig Grenawalt went 2-for-4 with two runs while Mathias Treinen had two hits and an RBI as the Vikings outhit Marshall 7-5.

Christian Hobon went 5 2-3 innings and allowed five hits and five runs (three earned).
