Announcements are in the mail for the 32nd Clyde High School alumni reunion Sept. 7 in the gymnasium of Clyde High School. Doors will open at 4:30 p.m. with dinner served by Ole' Zims Wagon Shed.

The guest speaker will be Anthony Panfalone, new principal at Clyde High. Classmates deceased in the past year will be remembered. There will be door prizes and a 50/50 raffle to benefit the scholarship fund. If one has not received their announcement, they should call President Sherry Boyer at 419-680-1026 or Secretary Jeanette Ricker at 419-547-8177.

The event has grown over the years and is now at almost full capacity in the gym; attendance was around 290 a year ago. Previously it had been held in the cafeteria and before that at the Green Springs VFW.

Other officers are Vice President Sylvia Schubach; Treasurer Carolyn Miller; chaplain Terri Jones, and corresponding Secretary Carolyn Smallets. The CHS Alumni Association was founded through the efforts of the late Glen Halbisen and others. Hopes were to establish a scholarship fund.

    Alumni award four scholarships annually

Due to the generosity of numerous alumni, four $1,000 scholarships are now awarded annually. This year's recipients are Loreli Phillips, who will attend Bowling Green State University, Firelands, to study early childhood education; Karissa Smith, attending University of Tiffin for nursing; Mercedes Brooks, University of Toledo for nursing; and Elizabeth Garcia, who will attend Penn State University for early childhood education.

Much planning goes into the event by delegates from classes that attended or graduated from CHS 50 or more years ago. Meetings begin monthly in May and continue until after the September reunion. It's always an interesting time, renewing acquaintances with classmates and those who graduated before or after.

When returning a reservation, it is important to get it in the mail early to ensure that it is received by the Aug. 14 deadline. Due to the large number of people to be seated, a seating chart is compiled after the reservations are received and every effort is made to seat each class together at tables. It takes the effort of many hands to set up tables, chairs, place settings, and more in the gym the night before the event, which has been assisted by members of Future Farmers of America under the guidance of their adviser, Barrett Zimmerman.

    Hirt Family to hold reunion

The 108th Hirt family reunion will be held Sunday at noon in the air-conditioned 4-H building at the Sandusky County Fairgrounds. All descendants of Casper and Verena Hirt are invited to attend. Casper was born in 1820 in Stilli, Switzerland, and later immigrated to the United States, eventually settling in Riley Township.

The meal is potluck only. There will be a baking contest, special raffles, games for children and a white elephant auction, with proceeds helping to cover costs. Color-coded Hirt family reunion shirts are available at R and R Identifications LLC, 160 S. Ohio 590, Fremont. Old/unwanted shirts can be brought to the reunion for a special project by Daun Diedrich. Officers are President Maggie (Hirt) Tourangeau ; Vice President Alison Schepflin; Secretary Jill Diedrich-Gunnisin; Treasurer Joel Hirt, and historian/webmaster Benjamin Hirt.

    Upcoming events

Clyde's annual garage sales are Friay through Sunday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Some sales begin Thursday.

Other events coming up are the Clyde Fair Sept. 20-22; the Halloween parade Oct. 26 at 4 p.m.; and Winesburg Weekend Nov. 22-24.
