Earlier, the Handelsblatt newspaper reported that the European Union is considering the possibility of concluding a new gas supply contract with Gazprom after the expiration of the fuel transit agreement through Ukraine. As one option, it is proposed to conclude a new contract between Gazprom Export and a European energy company, which will buy gas on the Russian-Ukrainian border, send it to the EU and pay the "Operator of the gas transmission system of Ukraine" for transit. At the same time, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that Ukraine is studying the possibility of pumping Azerbaijani gas through its territory into the EU after the end of the transit agreement with Gazprom at the end of this year.On gas transit through UkraineIn December 2019, Gazprom and Naftogaz agreed to extend the transit of Russian gas through Ukrainian territory for the period from 2020 to 2024 with the possibility of prolongation. The contract provides for the transit of 65 billion cubic meters of gas in 2020 and 40 billion cubic meters annually from 2021 to 2024. The agreement implies the "take or pay" principle: the transit fee is charged in the amount of the booked capacity, even if the actual pumping is less.
