Karolyn Vreeland Blume, Esq.
Karolyn Vreeland Blume, Esq., 71 of Allentown, passed away peacefully at home on July 16, 2024. Blume was a prominent member of the legal community in Allentown for over 45 years. She was a trail blazer who found great joy in opening doors for others. She was among the first women licensed to practice law in Lehigh County 1977 and was admitted to the United States Supreme Court in 1986. While in private practice, she became the first woman and youngest person to be elected President of the Bar Association of Lehigh County in 1990. In 1992, she became a Senior Law Clerk in the U.S. District Court of the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, before becoming counsel at the PPL Corporation in 2001. In 2004, Karolyn opened a mediation practice where she used her consensus building skills to help people resolve their disputes amicably. She continued this work for 20 years, publishing Eat the Elephant: Overcoming Overwhelm in 2015.

Realtors' association expresses opposition to possible deed transfer tax referendum
ALLENTOWN, Pa. – Allentown City Council deferred action on a bill that would authorize the Lehigh County Board of Elections to place a referendum on the Nov. 5 ballot asking voters to amend the home rule charter to delete the deed transfer tax from the section which regulates the tax rate.

Gerald T. Melady
Gerald “Jerry” T. Melady, 83, of Schnecksville, formerly of Bethlehem, passed away Friday, July 19, 2024, at Bethlehem North Skilled Nursing. He was the husband of Elizabeth “Betty” (McKee) Melady. Born in Philadelphia, December 8, 1941, Jerry was the son of the late Frederick A. Melady, Sr. and Catherine (Black) Melady. He worked in the shipping department of the former E.F. Houghton, Inc., Fogelsville for 42 years before retiring. He was a member of Notre Dame Catholic Church, Bethlehem and attended St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Church, Orefield.
Planners OK school project
The Chestnuthill Township Planning Commission approved Pleasant Valley School District’s renovation plans for the high school on Wednesday evening, with a stipulation. The school district had submitted its plans to the township as preliminary/final. Christopher McDermott, township engineer, said the plans could only be submitted as preliminary or final, not both.
Coaldale woman charged with animal cruelty
A Coaldale woman was charged with multiple counts of animal cruelty and neglect related to the May rescue of 17 dogs and other animals from her property in May. Coaldale police charged Bethany Bachert, 70, of Bull Run Street, Friday on six counts of felony aggravated cruelty to animals; 18 counts of misdemeanor cruelty to animals; 17 counts of misdemeanor neglect of animals for failing to provide food and water; and 11 counts of misdemeanor neglect of animals for failing to provide necessary veterinary care.
