Planners OK school project
The Chestnuthill Township Planning Commission approved Pleasant Valley School District’s renovation plans for the high school on Wednesday evening, with a stipulation. The school district had submitted its plans to the township as preliminary/final. Christopher McDermott, township engineer, said the plans could only be submitted as preliminary or final, not both.
PSP BETHLEHEM — CRASHES
State police Bethlehem reported the following crashes:. • No one was injured in a two-vehicle crash at 4:24 p.m. July 12 on Route 873 in Washington Township. Police said a 2022 Toyota Corolla driven by Rita D. Blose, 81, of Allentown, struck the rear of a 2013 Chevrolet Equinox operated by Mary C. Lakatosh, 73, of Walnutport.
Gerald T. Melady
Gerald “Jerry” T. Melady, 83, of Schnecksville, formerly of Bethlehem, passed away Friday, July 19, 2024, at Bethlehem North Skilled Nursing. He was the husband of Elizabeth “Betty” (McKee) Melady. Born in Philadelphia, December 8, 1941, Jerry was the son of the late Frederick A. Melady, Sr. and Catherine (Black) Melady. He worked in the shipping department of the former E.F. Houghton, Inc., Fogelsville for 42 years before retiring. He was a member of Notre Dame Catholic Church, Bethlehem and attended St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Church, Orefield.

The Panther Valley School District will soon have a Spanish Honor Society after teacher Evelyn Hydock and her students proposed one to school board members Wednesday night. “In today’s interconnected world, proficiency in multiple languages is a valuable asset,” said Hydock, who pointed out being bilingual has opened many doors for her.

Coaldale woman charged with animal cruelty
A Coaldale woman was charged with multiple counts of animal cruelty and neglect related to the May rescue of 17 dogs and other animals from her property in May. Coaldale police charged Bethany Bachert, 70, of Bull Run Street, Friday on six counts of felony aggravated cruelty to animals; 18 counts of misdemeanor cruelty to animals; 17 counts of misdemeanor neglect of animals for failing to provide food and water; and 11 counts of misdemeanor neglect of animals for failing to provide necessary veterinary care.
