Raymond Newell, a research scientist at Los Alamos National Laboratory, was recently named Battelle’s Inventor of the Year for Los Alamos. The annual award recognizes inventors from Battelle and from Battelle-managed laboratories, including Brookhaven National Laboratory, Idaho National Laboratory, the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, and Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. Newell was honored in May at the Celebration of Solvers ceremony at Battelle Memorial Institute in Columbus, Ohio.

Nick Ferenchak likes his quiet — whether sleeping at night or hiking in the Sandia Mountains — and he has a plan to preserve his quietude from noisy vehicles. Ferenchak, an assistant professor in the Gerald May Department of Civil, Construction and Environmental Engineering at the University of New Mexico, is the president of Not-A-Loud, a local company that creates noise camera systems that take pictures of the license plates on vehicles that produce too many decibels. Man taken in custody after breaking into clinic to dodge police
A man is in custody after he tried to evade police by breaking into a dialysis clinic Friday in northeast Albuquerque. According to a criminal complaint, Clement Akiya was among a group of people sitting on private property along the 900 block of Louisiana Boulevard NE around 7 p.m. Friday. After officers arrived at the scene, Akiya tried to provide officers with a false name when he was asked to identify himself.

The 2024 report gave the town an “A-” overall score, taking into account categories including schools, housing and weather. Artesia scored an A+ in jobs, and an A in public schools and in diversity. The lowest score for Artesia is a C+ for Crime and Safety.
