Saharan dust in the wind: Photo of the Week, July 16-20, 2024

Back in 1977, in a song on an album titled "Point of Know Return," the band Kansas gave us something to think about with haunting lyrics telling us that "All we are is dust in the wind."

In the case of Saharan dust which travels across the Atlantic from the western coast of Africa, it can make for some haunting yet bold, beautiful evening skies — "and some weird ones," says Malcolm Denemark, FLORIDA TODAY senior photographer.

Denemark snagged this moody yet lovely shot as low-hanging clouds, a misty rain and the dust came together over the Banana River in Cocoa Beach on July 16.

Does this Photo of the Week come with a philosophical message like that shared by Kansas in "Dust in the Wind"?

That, like beauty, is in the eye of the beholder.

" Nothin' lasts forever but the earth and sky/It slips away/And all your money won't another minute buy /

Dust in the wind/All we are is dust in the wind/Dust in the wind/Everything is dust in the wind."
