Wildfire in Southern Asotin County Reaches 6,758 Acres, is 19% Contained
ASOTIN COUNTY - The Cougar Creek Fire is burning about 23 miles southwest of Asotin in timber grass and brush, near Highway 129. The fire is located in rugged rangeland with isolated pockets of timber in a mixed topography of ridgelines, benches, plateaus, and secondary drainages. The blaze was first reported around 7:00 p.m. on Monday.

OTIS ORCHARDS, Wash. - A 3-year-old boy was pulled from the Spokane River today and taken to the hospital in critical condition. According to the Spokane Valley Fire Department, firefighters responded to East Buckeye Avenue near Barker Road at 6:38 p.m. for a reported drowning. Six minutes after receiving the call, they arrived.

100 years agoThe Bonneville Cow Testing association held its first picnic this week in July 1924, with close to 300 dairymen, farmers and businessmen attending the event, held at the A.H. Beasley ranch nine miles south of Idaho Falls. “The picnic was a decided success and marked another step for Idaho toward its recognition as the premier dairying state of the country,” the Salt Lake Tribune reported. The program included addresses by A.H. Upham, president of the University of Idaho; E.G. Bennett, vice president of the Anderson Bros. Bank of Idaho Falls; D.P. Murray, district club leader among the boys and girls; and C.R. Richards, county agent of Teton County. M.B. Yeaman presided as chairman. Red Eye, owned by Carl Johnson of the Sunny Side dairy, won first place in butter-fat production with a record 175.3 pounds. Mary Pack won the milking contest while a yearling calf belonging to her 13-year-old daughter, Florence, won first place in the heifer contest.

Sunday will be the hottest day of the weekend and week ahead across the Inland Northwest, with temperatures ranging between 100 and 110 degrees. Spokane's forecast high on Sunday is sitting around 105 degrees, with Coeur d'Alene following close behind at 103. Down south, Lewiston will be reaching even more dangerously hot conditions with a daytime of 112 expected in the LC Valley. Overnight low temperatures will mostly range between the 60s and 70s across the region.

A 13-year-old Pocatello girl drowned in Bear Lake on Saturday, authorities said.
