Niagara sinks STAA to claim Division 4 Regional crown

    2024-05-29

Coleman, Saint Thomas Aquinas Academy, Wausaukee and Lena all took the field on Tuesday for the semifinal round of the WIAA Regional baseball playoffs.

Who advanced to the Regional championship game and who went home? Read on to find out.

    Division 3

No. 4 Wittenberg-Birnamwood 5 — No. 5 Coleman 0WITTENBERG, Wis. — Nathan Waupekenay limited Coleman to just two hits as Wittenberg-Birnamwood sank the Cougars 2-0.

Logan Kurth and Kollin Peters both tallied base knocks for the Cougars but offense was otherwise in short supply, as Waupekenay struck out six batters while issuing only two walks in seven innings pitched.

Coleman’s power outage wasted a sterling performance on the mound by Kurth, who racked up 11 strikeouts against five hits and five runs (three earned).

The Chargers snatched a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning and tacked on another run in the bottom of the fourth before plating a pair of insurance runs the following inning.

Waupekenay collected two RBIs on a 1-for-3 outing at the plate.

Gavin Pusick notched a stolen base for the Cougars.

Coleman concludes the 2024 season with an overall record of 18-6.

No. 8 Saint Thomas Aquinas Academy 6 — No. 1 Florence 4FLORENCE — Fifth-inning magic propelled Saint Thomas Aquinas Academy to a 6-4 upset over top-seeded Florence.

With the score tied at 4-4, Florence committed a pair of errors that allowed Henry Piasecki and Ethan King to dash past home plate and put the Cavaliers on top by two.

STAA got a 1-2-3 inning in the sixth before the Bobcats mounted a comeback in the bottom of the seventh after Mason Koski reached base on an error before moving into scoring position on a single by Trent McClain.

Teagan Anderson got Bryce Leffler and Matthew Smith to fly out before a free pass issued to Bradley Steber loaded the bases for the Bobcats.

Rather than panic, Anderson simply regrouped and struck out Logan Koski looking to end the game.

Jack Farley was the winning pitcher and added a pair of RBIs on a 3-5 outing at the dish. He struck out six, walked four and gave up 5 hits and four earned runs in five-and-one-third innings of work on the mound.

The two teams were evenly matched until the bottom of the third inning, when the Badgers erupted for 10 runs to take a 12-2 lead before going on to win by a score of 13-3.

Anderson put STAA on the board first with a two-run home run in the top of the first before Christian Hedmark and Mason Richtig scored on an error and a wild pitch respectively to tie the game at 2-2.

Niagara took the lead for good in the bottom of the third, with Hedmark and Blake Holmes both cracking RBI-singles as part of the Badgers’ 10-run onslaught.

Anderson scored on an error in the fourth to cut STAA’s deficit down to nine, but after the Cavaliers were retired in order to begin the fifth, Niagara polished off the win with an RBI-single from Brayden Bartels, which caused the game to end via the 10-run mercy rule.

Only two of Niagara’s 13 runs were earned, as the Badgers capitalized on seven errors in the field by the Cavaliers.

Dakota Yother took the loss on the mound with nine hits, five walks, two strikeouts and 12 runs (one earned) through four-and-one-third innings.

Richtig was the winning pitcher after giving up just two hits, three runs, two of which were earned, and five walks while notching six strikeouts.

Anderson and Peters were responsible for all three of the Cavs’ base knocks, with Anderson adding a stolen base in the process.
