Kansas defensive end to visit Nebraska on July 27
A defensive end from Kansas has scheduled a visit with the Nebraska Cornhuskers. Hunter Higgins will visit the Lincoln campus on July 27. His visit will come just days after his July 25 visit to the Oklahoma Sooners. The three-star prospect plays for Maize South High School in Wichita, Kansas. National recruiting analyst Tom Lemming had high praise for Higgins last December. He wrote, (Higgins) should be become a national recruit. Excellent length, quick hands and feet and shows explosive moves to the ball. Tenacious and tough. Terrific attitude. 3.9 GPA. The recruit has been a popular player recently. Braydon Zink, Mud County on stage for second Downtown Sounds
SIDNEY -- Plan on a night of high energy country music Friday, July 19, as Braydon Zink and Mud County take the stage for the second of three Downtown Sounds concerts. Downtown Sounds is a family-friendly concert venue held at Hickory Street Square in downtown Sidney. Gates open at 5 p.m. with the show starting at 6 p.m. The event will include food vendors and drink vendors.
One person dies after train and van collide in east Kearney
KEARNEY, Neb. — One man is dead after a train and van collided in east Kearney. It happened around 12:30 on Highway 30 just east of Eaton Corporation. The highway is closed from Airport Road to the Highway 10F Link just west of Eaton as authorities investigate the crash.

Nebraska Countdown to Kickoff: No. 44 DL Riley Von Poppel
The countdown to Nebraska’s season opener on August 31 against the University of Texas at El Paso Miners is down to just 44 days, bringing Huskers sophomore defensive lineman Riley Von Poppel in today’s player spotlight. The 6-foot-5, 275-pound Van Poppel was a frequent sight on the field last season in his first year with the program, playing in each of the Huskers’ last 11 games. On the season, the Argyle, Texas native recorded five tackles, one tackle for loss, and half a sack. An understudy to nose tackle Nash Hutmacher, Van Poppel is expected to once again have a rotational role for the Huskers in 2024. He’ll get frequent playing time and could take a big step forward from his freshman season if all progresses well. Following this fall, Van Poppel would be in line to become the Huskers starting defensive tackle as Nash Hutmacher is expected to exhaust his eligibility this fall. Lexington man accused of trying to slit man’s throat charged with attempted murder
LEXINGTON, Neb. (KNOP) - A Lexington man was charged with attempted murder after allegedly trying to slit a man’s throat. Eber Gamolier, 20, was arraigned Wednesday on two felony charges: attempted murder and use of a deadly weapon to commit a felony. A judge set his bond at 10% of $200,000.
Man dead after lawnmower pins him to ground
JESUP, Iowa (KCRG) - A man died Thursday afternoon after a lawnmower rolled off of a trailer and pinned him to the ground. The Buchanan County Sheriff’s Office says they got a report of an accident involving equipment, with a man pinned under a lawnmower. The call came in around 12:50 p.m. Emergency crews quickly responded to the 1,000 block of 160th Street north of Jesup.
