There have been several bear sightings in Montgomery County this year, but they have slowed as most bears move west as we move into mid-summer.

“SOLD OUT. We’re sorry but we did not anticipate the quantity of burritos y’all can throw down.” San Pancho Burritos, which recently opened at 7056 Carroll Ave in Takoma Park, was forced to close early on Monday after selling out of burritos. The restaurant will reopen on Wednesday morning at 8am.

“Attorney General Brian L. Schwalb today announced that Swahili Village M Street, LLC (Swahili Village DC) and its owner, Kevin Onyona, must pay $526,973 to restaurant workers and DC to resolve a 2023 wage theft lawsuit. In its lawsuit, the Office of the Attorney General (OAG) alleged that Swahili Village DC systematically stole wages and tips from its servers, hosts, food runners, bussers, and bartenders and violated multiple DC labor laws. Under the terms of this settlement, Swahili Village DC and Onyona must pay more than $260,000 to 72 restaurant workers, fund the process to distribute worker restitution, and pay penalties to the District.

Sailing out of West Ocean City, Captain Monty Hawkins of Morning Star Fishing has been out on the sea bas grounds this week, but during their travels, they’ve been able to pick off some mahi-mahi for a little extra meat, and a bit of variation from the usual bottom fishing. On Monday, they headed out to mostly calms seas but according to the captain, they had to work for each fish, whereas on Sunday, the fishing was steady and one angler even had a limit on jigs—a somewhat rare occurrence on the Morning Star. The mahi they ran into were very small, too small to keep, so they were all thrown back. The skipper referred to them in a Facebook post as “micro mahi”, which indicates that they were likely only a few weeks old. Tuesday’s sea bass fishing was better with calm enough seas to fish comfortably and blue skies, however, after finding only a few keeper-size mahi—including a decent one pulled from a cluster of floating grass— they went back to sea bass fishing. He said the sea bass preferred the jig on Tuesday, but not by much. Then, on Wednesday, the skipper received conflicting weather forecasts and, with a light crowd, headed out to find deteriorating conditions. The first few stops they made found more small mahi, several of which were keepers. When the mahi fishing slowed, they dropped anchor on a solid sea bass bite with double headers coming over the rail continuously until the captain noticed winds climbing to nearly 30 knots and a 240-degree shift in wind direction that would find building seas. As the bite slowed, he pulled anchor and their group got a rocky ride back to port with plenty of meat for dinner. Plenty of action to be had out there and better weather ahead!

Due to extreme heat, recreational fishers in Maryland are currently restricted from targeting specific fish species in designated areas. The Maryland Department of Natural Resources has advised against fishing for trout in catch-and-release areas and has prohibited targeting striped bass in the Chesapeake Bay and tidal tributaries until the end of July. This measure aims to protect fish populations from the additional stress and mortality caused by elevated water temperatures, which have reached the upper 60s and low 70s, creating harmful conditions for fish due to high temperatures and low oxygen levels.

A proposed bill that would help people with pets experiencing homelessness access D.C.’s shelter system is making its way through the D.C. Council, with a public hearing likely to take place this fall. The Pets in Housing Act, introduced by At-large D.C. Council member Robert White, will also help D.C. pet owners who struggle to find housing due to breed-specific fees or restrictions.

I mentioned it when picking up my food and the employee gave an exasperated “yeeeeah,” which suggests selling alcohol came with issues and they stopped doing it. I have been in a few times since and they haven’t had it.”

Hootie and the Blowfish will be returning to the area with two local concerts in August. The first will be in Columbia, MD at Merriweather Post Pavilion on August 3rd followed by a show in Bristol, VA at Jiffy Lube Live on August 17th. This is somewhat of a homecoming as half of the band, Mark Bryan and Dean Felber, are graduates of Seneca Valley High School in Germantown.
