Former Five-Star Recruit Loses Quarterback Battle Before 2024 Season

The Boise State Broncos have named their starting quarterback for the 2024 season. It isn't the signal caller many anticipated would start for the team.

Redshirt sophomore Maddux Madsen is set to start for Boise State at quarterback. The news comes in spite of the Broncos' high profile transfer addition in former USC signal caller Malachi Nelson.

Nelson, a former five-star quarterback, ranked as the No. 5 quarterback and No. 11 overall player in the 2023 On3 Sports Industry Ranking.

After the blue chip prospect transferred from USC, fellow backup Miller Moss emerged as a potential successor for star quarterback Caleb Williams in Los Angeles. While still talented, Nelson appears to have more development left on the table before he sees the field.

Madsen made plays for Boise State in nine games last season. The sophomore quarterback threw for 1,191 yards and nine touchdowns with three interceptions. He added two rushing touchdowns and 120 yards on the ground.

The decision comes ahead of a pivotal season for the Broncos, who have been mentioned as a potential Group of Five selection for the College Football Playoff. Boise State went 8-6 in 2023.

The Broncos begin their season against the Georgia Southern Eagles on Aug. 31.
