Why Oklahoma State Is Wearing QR Codes On Its Helmets This Season

In the ever-growing age of Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL), innovative ideas for compensating college athletes are constantly emerging. With the competition off the field becoming just as fierce as on it, Oklahoma State's latest move to support its players comes as no surprise.

For the 2024 season, Oklahoma State football players will wear QR codes on the back of their helmets, which will directly link to the general team fund, according to Matt Fortuna at The Inside Zone . This new initiative allows Cowboys fans to contribute to the team’s NIL efforts in a unique and personal way.

It is believed that this is the first time in history that a college football team will wear QR codes in regular season games to promote NIL efforts.

Head coach Mike Gundy expressed his enthusiasm for the initiative.

“This is a revolutionary step forward to help keep Oklahoma State football ahead of the game," Gundy said. "It gives a chance for everyday fans across the world to have a real impact when it comes to supporting the NIL efforts for Cowboy football. I’m thrilled about this opportunity for our players.”

This move by Oklahoma State is another example of how NIL is reshaping college athletics, offering creative ways for programs to support their athletes financially. As NIL continues to evolve, other schools may look to similar strategies to maintain competitive rosters and engage their fan bases.
