Deion Sanders Loses Assistant Coach Prior To Season Opener

Ahead of the Colorado Buffaloes season opener for the 2024 college football season, head coach Deion Sanders will need to replace his special teams coach as Trevor Reilly has left the program.

Reilly was a quality control analyst focused on the special teams unit for the Buffs last fall and was the only one of Coach Prime's coaching and support staff of 22 who was specifically appointed as special teams coach.

A former NFL linebacker, Reilly started his coaching career as a graduate assistant on Sanders' Jackson State staff in 2021. When Sanders accepted the head coaching job in Boulder ahead of the 2023 campaign, Reilly transitioned over to Colorado alongside multiple other coaches.

With the loss of Reilly, the Buffaloes will be without a designated special teams coach to start the season. While the loss will be manageable for Sanders' staff, it could snowball into a larger issue if the special teams play begins to struggle.

Colorado's season opener will be against the No. 2-ranked FCS-level North Dakota State Bison at Folsom Field on Aug. 29. The game will start at 8:00 p.m. EDT and will air on ESPN.
