This is a statement game. No one’s talking about the MAC as being a possible part of the new College Football Playoff mix - SOMEONE from the Group of Five conferences gets in - but Miami University might just be that team if it can come up with at least one upset win vs. Northwestern, Cincinnati, or Notre Dame.
Northwestern is coming off a strong first season under David Braun, but as a program, there’s been issues with the RedHawks.
The Wildcats lost 17-14 at home in 2022, won 16-6 in 2009, got whacked 44-14 in 2003, lost 28-3 to open the 1999 season, and famously, lost 30-28 early in 1995 - the only defeat on the way to the Rose Bowl.

Why Miami University Will Win
The Miami offense will be a problem.
It’s not a high-octane attack, but it’ll be ultra-efficient, balanced, and experienced. Brett Gabbert is back at quarterback after missing most of last year hurt, the offensive line is almost all back full, and the receiving corps is good enough to bother the Northwestern secondary that lost a slew of key parts.
Why Northwestern Will Win
Northwestern has to crank up its own offense.
The quarterback situation is better. Transfer Mike Wright is a dangerous option, the running backs are solid, and the receiving corps is good enough to keep things moving. But it’s about the mistakes.
Northwestern lived on takeaways and pouncing on every opportunity - the defense should do that again starting with a loaded linebacking corps.
Northwestern vs Miami University: Who Will Win
This is very, very, VERY dangerous - and very beautiful. As renovations are being made to Ryan Field, there’s no better setting in college football this year than the intimate Lanny and Sharon Martin Stadium overlooking Lake Michigan.
Miami has all the talent and experience to pull this off as long as Gabbert is sharp. Can Northwestern’s defense get to him enough? No. Miami will be in it up until the final drive.
