Now it has to rally back quickly against a dangerous Marshall team that needed a little while to make it a blowout, but beat Stony Brook 45-3.
How did it go so wrong for Virginia Tech? It took a while to warm up, and it let the door open for Vanderbilt. Diego Pavia kicked it in.
The Commodore quarterback is a dangerous veteran who ran well, through great in key moments, and Marshall has playmakers at quarterback who can bother the Hokie defense.

Virginia Tech was fine. The defense had a tough day, the ground game didn't generate enough of a push, and it was a loss the program didn't expect to whiff.
But QB Kyron Drones was terrific - he threw for 322 yards and two scores - and the offense moved well. It had one turnover, Vanderbilt didn't and the time of possession battle went the wrong way.
