Heisman Trophy Rankings Week 3: Top 10 Contenders in the 2024 Race

So here's how we're doing this. If the Heisman Trophy voting was being done today , how would it come out? Who would be the ten best players in college football this season?

Who came up with the signature moments, the big wins, the biggest plays - who were the ones who made the biggest impact so far?

No, this isn't projective - Oregon's Dillon Gabriel should probably be here at some point, just because, and Tenenessee QB Nico Iamaleava will make lots and lots of noise over the next few months.

This is based on the right now, but we're also keeping this real.

There might be some amazing things happening across the country, but this is mostly an award for the offensive stars.

So we start with one guy who really does belong right in the mix for the players of the season 2.5 weeks in.

10. Ethan Hampton, QB Northern Illinois

Okay, so this is a one-week thing, but really, on the two-week merits he should be higher.

Hampton is third in the nation in passing efficiency after two games - that's mostly because he only missed two throws with 328 yards and five scores against Western Illinois - but he didn't make any mistakes in the win over Notre Dame.

He threw for almost 200 yards and a touchdown, and he cranked up the biggest win of the college football season so far.

9. Jaxson Dart, QB Ole Miss

He shouldn't really be on this list quite yet - blasting away on Furman and Middle Tennessee shouldn't be enough - but he leads the nation in passing efficiency, hitting 87% of his throws for close to 800 yards and six scores with no picks. He's been almost perfect.

8. Ollie Gordon, RB Oklahoma State

Yeah, Arkansas held him in check, but even though he only ran for 49 yards, he came up with the key touchdown run - he made it look SO easy - in the thrilling 39-31 win.

The 126 yards and three scores against South Dakota State - the best FCS team in the country - was a better day than he received credit for.

7. Carson Beck, QB Georgia

Yeah, yeah, yeah, best-player-on-best-team is lame, but he really is the best player on what really might be the best team in the country. He hit 71% of his throws with seven touchdowns and no picks in two games, including a too-easy performance against Clemson.

6. Diego Pavia, QB Vanderbilt

Oh sure, he should still be here for at least this week after his amazing day in the win over Virginia Tech.

He followed up what he did against the Hokies - 75% for 190 yards and two scores, and over 100 rushing yards with a game-winning touchdown - with a layup against Alcorn State. The real test will be against Missouri and then Alabama in a few weeks.

5. Jalen Milroe, QB Alabama

It took a little while to get rolling against USF, and he wasn't really needed against WKU, but the guy who'll end up winning the Heisman - at least I think so - has thrown for almost 400 yards with five scores and no picks, and he ran for two scores in each of the last two games.

4. Cam Ward, QB Miami

He hasn't been perfect, but he's been close. There was an interception in the easy win over Florida, but that's been the only blip. On the year so far he completed 75% of his passes for 689 yards and six touchdowns with a rushing score. He has been brilliant.

3. Miller Moss, QB USC

There have only been two touchdown passes, and there's no rushing whatsoever, but he came through in the clutch to push USC past LSU - and got Lincoln Riley over his hot seat - with 378 yards and a touchdown.

He didn't throw an interception in that, and he was just fine in the blowout win over Utah State throwing for 229 yards and a score.

2. Quinn Ewers, QB Texas

There was an interception against Colorado State. Oooooooh. He wasn't needed much in the 52-0 win, but he hit close to ten yards per throw with three touchdowns.

He walked into Michigan Stadium on Saturday, threw for 246 yards and three touchdowns without an interception, won 31-12, and left after having way too easy a time against a still-good - even with new parts - defending national champion defense.

1. Ashton Jeanty, RB Boise State

Jeanty has been the best player in college football over the first two games - and Week 0 - and it hasn't been remotely close.

The compact pounder of a back ran for 279 yards and six scores against Georgia Southern, and followed it up by ripping apart Oregon for almost 200 yards and three touchdowns.

On the year he's averaging over ten yards per carry, and there aren't any signs of slowing down.
