LSU needs to come up with a statement.
It’s still good enough to be a factor in the SEC race and get into the College Football Playoff, but it has to play better than it did in the 44-21 win over Nicholls State.
It gets three straight road games after this, but first it has to put down a dangerous South Carolina team.
The Gamecocks needed everything in the bag to get by Old Dominion, and then everything clicked. In an under-the-radar whopper of a performance, they shocked Kentucky with a dominant 31-6 win in Lexington.
With Akron up next, win this, and start 4-0 before dealing with Ole Miss, at Alabama, and at Oklahoma.
It isn’t perfect, but Garrett Nussmeier is working off of two straight 300-yard games - three straight if you go back to the win over Wisconsin in the bowl game last year - and it’s still explosive even with all of the new parts.

The Gamecocks are 2-0 on their pass rush. The offense is just okay, there’s nothing happening on third downs, and the attack has been all over the place, but the defense has registered five sacks in each of the two games.
LSU has yet to allow a sack this season. However …
Why South Carolina Will Win
The Gamecocks are doing a slew of little things right.
They’re not getting hit with a ton of penalties, turnovers aren’t an issue, and again the pass rush has been disruptive.
In this, two things are everything - third down stops, and the time of possession battle. South Carolina has to get control of the game from the start, and that starts with stuffing the run.
LSU couldn’t move at all on the ground against Nicholls State, but it didn’t exactly max out the effort. Even so, the Gamecocks need to force a slew of-third-and-long plays.
But …
LSU vs South Carolina: Who Will Win
South Carolina isn’t running well enough, and the passing attack needs to be more accurate.
Kentucky couldn’t handle the South Carolina defensive front, but LSU’s O line should be able to neutralize it a little bit. The crowd will be insane, the environment wonderful, and …
LSU will come up with two scoring drives right away to yuck the yum.
