Washington State continues to be terrific.

It isn’t perfect, and it probably should’ve lost to San Jose State, and maybe Washington, but it’s 4-0, it’s about to be the star of a refurbished conference, and it has a real, live shot to be in the mix for big things if it can run the table.

Boise State pushed Oregon, rocked offensively against Georgia Southern and Portland State, and now it’s auditioning to be the best of the Group of Five champions if it can get rolling next week starting against Utah State.

The offense is doing everything right. QB John Mateer continues to be the best quarterback you probably hasn’t seen, the running game is going off, and Boise State has to prove it can hold up against all of it.

Georgia Southern bombed away on the Broncos, Oregon was able to throw well enough pull off a win, and Wazzu has the downfield passing game to open things up for the ground attack. Mateer is averaging close to 17 yards per completion, and …

Why Boise State Will Win

The Boise State run defense has been great.

It starts with the nation’s best pass rush averaging four sacks per game - that overcomes giving up lots and lots of third down conversions - and it should be able to take away what the Cougars do on the ground, which is basically Mateer taking off.

The Bronco offense is humming, the ground game averages almost nine yards per carry, and Maddux Madsen has been just fine after being the surprise call for the starting quarterback.

Washington State really is good, but it took a little bit of magic to get over the Washington and San Jose State, and four takeaways were the big difference against Texas Tech.
