Welcome to the Bama Offense, SEC: 5 Key Takeaways from Alabama’s Classic Win Over Georgia

    By Pete Fiutak,

    Well that was certainly fun.

    What more do you want?

Alabama's 41-34 win over Georgia had tremendous offensive plays, a huge comeback, lots of heart from both sides, and two heavyweights trading huge punches in a game that had a little bit of everything.

Here are five takeaways, thoughts, musings, and things that matter from the instant classic.

    Alabama 41, Georgia 34

    5. Well THAT was fun, Georgia and Alabama. Let’s do it again …

    And again.

Really? Did the 12-team expanded College Football Playoff take away one ounce of fun from this? Nah, it was still special.

Even in the pre-expanded CFP way there might be a second meeting between these two - they can and might play each other in the SEC Championship. And then there’s a shot to meet again in this new expanded CFP.

(By the way, I’m not buying into Texas yet, and still not totally sure about Tennessee, but that’s for another day.)

Alabama will be favored against everyone the rest of the way by double-digits except for Tennessee on the road on October 19th.

Georgia has it tougher with dates at Texas and Ole Miss and home games against Tennessee and the rivalry date against Georgia Tech, but …

Yeah, let’s get more of this.

    4. Carson Beck showed why he’s just that good (after showing why there's still some concern)

Everyone has a bad day, and in this, Georgia QB Carson Beck had a rough first 40 minutes.

It wasn’t all his fault. Alabama played like it had 13 defensive guys on the field with the pass rush jumping on Beck’s head. He kept his cool, kept firing away, and he ended up throwing for 439 yards and three touchdowns to get the Dawgs back in the game.

The three interceptions were a problem, especially the one at the end, but that’s why the NFL scouts are so in love with is potential.

    And …

    3. If that wasn’t Jalen Milroe’s Heisman performance ….

It wasn’t all him, but against a Georgia defense loaded with NFL talent, and with all the hype and pressure on his shoulders, he not only proved to be up to the challenge, but in the biggest moments late, he pulled it off.

Yeah, Zavien Brown helped with that thanks to the pick, and more on the other No. 2 in a second, but 27-of-33 for 374 yards and two touchdowns with an interception, and 16 carries for 117 yards and two scores.

And the 41-34 win over Georgia. And down one in the final two minutes the 75-yard touchdown pass to ...

    2. Ryan Williams is very good at playing football

To paraphrase Kip Winger, he’s only 17.

Alabama freshman WR Ryan Williams was having a great game with five catches for 102 yards against the great Georgia defense, and then came one of the legendary plays in Crimson Tide history.

He fought for the ball, got just the right amount of pushoff, made the leaping grab, and … gone.

One play, 75 yards, and Alabama survived and advanced, and …

    1. Kalen DeBoer got his first SEC win

That’s the DeBoer offense at its finest.

Could the attack that blew up at Washington and got the team to the national championship last season instantly translate to Alabama? How long would it take to get up to speed?

More than that, it’s the mindset of how the Crimson Tide will roll going forward.

    Attack, attack, attack.

Yeah, MAYBE Alabama should’ve done more to bleed the clock late, and yeah, MAYBE there should be more carries from the running backs, but again, it’s the way this thing works that takes over in pressure situations.

    Be fearless.

Michael Penix Jr. was able to do that, and obviously Jalen Milroe doesn’t have any issues with the pressure.

Yes, focus on the way the O stalled in the second half, and yes, be concerns about how Bama let the Dawgs back in the game, but 547 yards against Georgia isn’t bad.

(By the way, the last time anyone past 400 yards on Georgia was in the 2022 SEC Championship when LSU rolled up 549.)
