Notre Dame is back on track with a strong win over Louisville as part of a three-game winning streak, and now it’s rested a bit with two weeks off before getting its final home game before dealing with Florida State a month from now.
Stanford has been hit-or-miss, but the team that rose up and shocked Syracuse couldn’t get going against Clemson and got rocked by Virginia Tech.
The Fighting Irish won the meeting at the end of last year 56-23, but the fan base is still scarred by the stunning 16-14 Cardinal win in the middle of 2022.

It lost star pass rusher Boubacar Traore, the secondary and O line are a bit thin, and even with the two weeks off, the depth will be tested the rest of the way.
Stanford needs to come out firing. QB Ashton Daniels was out for the Virginia Tech game, but he’s expected to be okay and ready to roll for this.
So far this season the Cardinal attack has been about the ground game, and the passing attack has been way off - it hasn’t hit 180 yards in any of the four games against FBS teams.
It can’t be afraid in this. The Irish secondary might be great, but as long as the Cardinal keep pressing ...
Why Notre Dame Will Win
Stanford has no downfield passing game.
There was one big play against Syracuse to get the win, and that’s been about it.
The Irish defense - as banged up as it is - is way too good to be pounded on too hard. Stanford might be averaging over four yards per carry, but the running game hasn’t scored over the last three games.
Notre Dame has to keep on blasting away - forget the passing game and grind, grind, grind.
This has been the same thing over the last few weeks with the Irish, and it holds true. They abandoned the running game against Northern Illinois with just 28 carries. When they get over 30 carries, everything turns out okay.
In Stanford’s two wins Cal Poly ran 20 times and Syracuse came up with just 17 carries. TCU, Clemson, and Virginia Tech - the three teams that beat the Cardinal - ran 30 times or more.
Notre Dame vs Stanford: Who Will Win
Notre Dame fans will go into meltdown mode as Stanford keeps this close by grinding away for over four yards per carry. But all those good drives will stall.
It won’t be anything pretty - especially coming off the break - but the Irish will bust through in the second half and start to pull away.
Just look at the final score, Notre Dame types, and don’t ask how the sausage was made.
