Vanderbilt vs Ball State Prediction, Game Preview, and Betting Lines

    So Vanderbilt is for real?

It followed up the Alabama win with a win at Kentucky, and now it gets a warm-up date before dealing with Texas in Nashville. But can it avoid the type of stunning whiff like the loss at Georgia State a month ago?

Ball State win in a weird and wild game against a miserable Kent State team for the first FBS victory of the season.

It lost to Miami 62-0 and dropped the date vs James Madison 63-7, but on the plus side it gets three of the next four games - all in the MAC - at home.

    Why Ball State Will Win

How did Georgia State do it?

Vanderbilt was good enough to beat Alabama, Kentucky, and Virginia Tech, and it pushed Missouri hard, but it dropped the date at Georgia Tech because the defense had an awful day. It allowed over 400 yards twice this year and those were the two losses, and it allowed fewer than 400 in the four wins.

Ball State might have its issues, but the offense can crank up the passing game and has enough pop to keep things moving. The Cardinals have hit the 400-yard mark three times and 397 against Western Michigan, and ...

    Why Vanderbilt Will Win

Ball State couldn’t move the O at all in the 62-0 loss to Miami and the 63-7 loss to James Madison. The big offensive days came against the MAC teams and Southwest Missouri State.

The Cardinal defense hasn’t been able to hold down anyone - all the FBS teams cranked up 461 yards or more. Vanderbilt’s brilliance so far has been its ability to be in control.

Diego Pavia is fantastic on third down downs - the Commodores are second in the SEC and tenth in the nation converting 51% of their chances - and Ball State hasn’t stopped a thing.

If it seems like Vanderbilt’s offense is always on the field, it’s because it will be.

Vanderbilt vs Ball State: Who Will Win

That time of possession thing is a problem for Ball State. It needs to own the clock - it’s 13th in the nation at control of the ball - and it won’t.

Vanderbilt won’t exactly let down in the first half, but it’ll be hit a bit by the Ball State offense in a close early battle. Everything will kick in for the Commodores in the second half.
