DALLAS, Texas ( KETK ) — Mike Elko is back on the sidelines in College Station, this time as the Aggies head coach.

The New Jersey native can’t wait to lead Texas A&M moving forward and is excited to renew the rivalry with Texas in November.

Mike Elko Named A&M Head Football Coach

“I think it’s great for the state, I think it’s great for college football, that rivalry coming back I think when you have two brands like that that are that close to each other, they should play,” said Elko.

The Aggies and Longhorns will meet on November 30th at Kyle Field for the first time since 2011.

It’s a game with extra juice for the Aggie players, especially linebacker Taurean York.

“They weren’t really involved in our recruiting process, I don’t think they really reached out to me too much, you know,” said York. “But obviously it’s a special game for everybody in the state of Texas, so we’re excited for that game. I know Kyle Field is going to be rocking when that day comes.”

November 30th is a long way away, though, and A&M has to get through a tough SEC schedule before facing the Longhorns.

Mike Elko’s defensive mind, combined with the return of offensive playmakers like quarterback Connor Weigman and running back Reuben Owens has Aggie fans excited, and Timpson’s Terry Bussey, one of the top incoming freshmen in the country, figures to play a key role for A&M.

“I think he’s going to start on defense, but I do think everyone’s aware that he has the flexibility to help us in a lot of ways.,” said Elko. “His ability and the return game is something that we want to look to take advantage of, and you certainly see him developing and playing a critical role for us not only this year but in the years to come as well.

The Aggies kick off the season against Notre Dame on Saturday, August 31st at Kyle Field.

It will be an early test for Elko’s bunch in a great atmosphere as college game day makes its way to town.
