FIRST ALERT: Heavy rain, localized flash flooding expected Monday!
CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) - A break from the dangerous heat is coming at the expense of drenching rainfall and a growing potential for flash flooding to start the week! A few ongoing showers and storms slowly drifting into our inland counties will gradually diminish before daybreak Monday. For the rest of the region, temperatures will return to the mid to upper-70s inland, and hovering near 80° along the coast. A marginal (Level 1 out of 5) risk for severe weather remains in place across the Lowcountry, with the possibility of one or two storms producing a severe wind gust and frequent lightning before midnight. Our attention will then turn to an approaching cold front, which is why Monday is a First Alert Weather Day. As this front stalls nearby, widespread showers and storms will develop Monday afternoon and evening; locally heavy rainfall and gusty winds can be expected with any storm. Due to the slow movement of the activity and the high moisture content in the atmosphere, localized flash flooding will be possible in poor drainage and urban areas. A “Flood Watch” is now in effect for the Tri-County and Colleton County, where rainfall totals between 2 to 4 inches are most likely; locally higher amounts remain possible for areas that see repeated rounds of rain, which has a greater chance of occurring closer to the coast. Heavy rainfall could also be coincident with our evening high tide; high tide in the Charleston Harbor will occur at 5:09 PM, which could enhance the flood risk.
FIRST ALERT: Tracking heavy rainfall, flooding across Lowcountry
CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) - The Live 5 First Alert Weather team has declared Monday as a First Alert Weather Day because of excessive rainfall and expected localized flooding. First Alert Meteorologist Chris Holtzman says a flood watch has been issued for Colleton, Dorchester, Berkeley and Charleston Counties. Hampton, Jasper, and Beaufort Counties are also included in the watch.
