Sandhill cranes return to Colorado during spring migration

    2024-03-10

(Colorado) As winter loosens its grip and spring emerges, Colorado skies come alive with the sights and sounds of the annual Sandhill crane migration.

Over twenty thousand cranes pass through Colorado in March on their way north after wintering in southern New Mexico.

The large flocks are easy to spot on the open landscape and their trumpeting echoes from miles away. It is thrilling to watch the graceful birds bow, leap, and stretch their wings in their distinctive courtship dance.

There are several places to view these beautiful creatures in Colorado's San Luis Valley, including the Monte Vista National Wildlife Refuge. The wildlife refuge has a detailed guide with species information and the best Sandhill crane viewing sites and times.

Fruitgrowers Reservoir in Delta County is another prime Sandhill crane viewing spot. The birds fly through the area, roosting for the night at the north end of the reservoir.

The annual Eckert Crane Days celebrate the arrival of these welcome guests, and this year, the event is March 23rd and 24th at Fruitgrowers Reservoir. Western State Ranch will host a free barbeque at noon on March 23rd. For full event details, visit the Eckert Crane Days Facebook page.

March is here, and so are the magnificent Sandhill cranes!
