The U.S. Forest Service has taken command of a wildfire burning near Red Feather Lakes in Larimer County.

The Pearl Fire began early Monday and quickly spread to an estimated 138 acres. As of Tuesday morning, the Larimer County Sheriff’s Office had issued mandatory evacuations for a large area stretching from Colo. 14 to the Wyoming border.

The sheriff’s office said that it had determined the fire “originated on private property and was human caused,” but further details wouldn’t be released while an investigation is ongoing.

Fire departments from across the northern Front Range assisted with firefighting efforts on Monday, which included drops of water and fire retardants from air tankers and helicopters. The fire is considered 0% contained.

“I’m grateful for the rapid response by our many regional partners working together seamlessly to protect this community,” Larimer County Sheriff John Feyen said in a press release late Monday. “Fire can create uncertainty, especially for those with homes or property in the evacuation zones. Our hearts are with you tonight.”

An overnight evacuation shelter is open at Cache la Poudre Middle School in Laporte, and a large animal evacuation center has been set up at The Ranch Events Complex in Loveland.

Colorado Gov. Jared Polis on Monday verbally declared a disaster emergency in response to the Pearl Fire, authorizing state agencies to provide support and resources as firefighting operations continue.
