(COLORADO SPRINGS) — Hiking is a favorite summer activity for Colorado natives and tourists alike, and it’s great exercise. But hiking does not come without risks. Thankfully, those risks can be mitigated by good planning and a little extra knowledge.

Here are 8 safety tips from American Medical Response (AMR) for anybody who is planning to hit the Colorado trails during the upcoming warmer months. You can also visit the Hike Safe website to get more tips and preparedness information.

    1. Plan ahead. Planning is essential for safety. Check weather forecasts, and know how long your route will likely take.
    2. Have a buddy. Avoid hiking in the dark, and avoid hiking alone. Always bring a hiking partner with you, or at the very least tell someone where you are going and when you plan to be back.
    3. Use GPS . Bring a recent map of the trail you are going to hike, and bring a cell phone or Global Positioning System (GPS) device.
    4. Stay hydrated . If your hike lasts longer than 30 minutes you will need to carry water or a sports drink to stay hydrated. If you begin to feel overheated or faint, or if you have a headache, find shade and rest.
    5. Know your abilities . There are many beginner hikes, as well as advanced, in and around Colorado Springs. Choose something appropriate for your level of fitness. If you can’t talk while hiking, the hike is likely too strenuous.
    6. Stick to the trail . Stay on designated paths, especially in a new location, to avoid getting lost.
    7. Use sun protection . Wear protective clothing, such as a hat or long sleeves to avoid sunburn. Wear sunscreen on exposed skin.
    8. Avoid wildlife . Do not approach or feed wildlife—keep your distance. Bears can appear on trails, so it’s a good idea to keep bear spray and a protective whistle with you on hikes. Watch out for rattlesnakes, spiders, scorpions, and bees.

Stay safe out there, hikers, and have fun!
