(COLORADO SPRINGS) — The Colorado Springs Salvation Army has put a call out to the community for donations to help sustain meals for children of in-need families this summer.

According to the Salvation Army, its 2024 Red Shield Summer Day Camp is underway and at full capacity, with 35 families in El Paso County taking part and a record, 67 children enrolled.

The nine-week, faith-based summer day camp began on June 3 and goes through Aug. 2 and offers a “safe, fun-filled environment” for kids Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

During the week, the Salvation Army’s Colorado Café provides the children with breakfast, lunch, and snacks at no additional cost to families. “Our price is the best in the county for affordability,” said Red Shield Manager, Cassie Hansen. “We give our kids opportunities to travel and experience the state of Colorado for children that might not otherwise be afforded that.”

The summer day camp is for children ages five to 15 years old and because the Salvation Army is seeing a record number of children this summer, the organization needs your help more than ever.

“The Salvation Army faces increased food demand and extra costs throughout the summer when donations typically slow,” according to a press release sent on Tuesday, June 11.
We need the community’s help. Just $50 feeds a child for an entire week!”
