(COLORADO SPRINGS) — A snake brought to the Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region (HSPPR) has slithered her way to a miraculous recovery, after she suffered a gruesome facial injury.

According to HSPPR , Marigold the snake arrived at the shelter with a traumatic injury that had split her face, exposing part of her skull. HSPPR said the injury was too severe for surgery, but its veterinary team did not give up on this rugged reptile.

Warning: Some images show serious injury to the snake, discretion is advised.

HSPPR said Marigold needed extensive wound treatment every three to five days and required tube feeding. She ended up losing an eye, but thankfully, a dedicated veterinary technician named Elliot stepped up to offer Marigold a safe place to recover from her devastating injury. He offered to take her home and foster her, so she might have a fighting chance with someone experienced in exotic pet care.

Eight months later, Marigold was a new snake–her wound closed up, and her scales grew back. And after her harrowing ordeal, Marigold found something else with her healing… a home! HSPPR said Elliot just couldn’t let Marigold go after becoming buddies during her months of recovery and decided to make her temporary living situation permanent.

“She still has some trouble eating by herself, which is why I decided to officially adopt her a few months ago,” Elliot said. “I don’t mind helping her with her special needs because she is my special lady, and I think anyone who meets her would agree with me that she is a special lady indeed.”

Marigold’s story serves as a reminder that all creatures, from the furry to the scaly, deserve the care and compassion that vet techs like Elliot offer every day at HSPPR.
