Accessible hikes possible with Track-Chair program

(COLORADO SPRINGS) — The Colorado Springs Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services (PRCS) Track-Chair program is now offering access for all to parks and open spaces.

The Track-Chair program , a part of the Therapeutic Recreation and Trails, Open Space and Parks (TOPS), utilizes all-terrain mobility devices to assist visitors with mobility challenges in exploring the trails and open spaces in Colorado Springs. The program removes barriers and allows visitors to explore designated trails that aren’t suitable for regular wheelchairs.

Each Track-Chair is equipped with rear stability wheels, powered reclining chairs, a four-point harness, and attendant controls for volunteers or park staff to assist with maneuvering. Staff is unable to assist with the transfer in/out of the chairs, they ask individuals to bring any items they may need.

Participation is free and reservations are required. Programming will be held on Wednesdays, July 17 and Sept. 18 at Blodgett Open Space and on Wednesday, Aug. 21 at Red Rock Canyon Open Space.

All hikes will take place from 8 a.m. to noon.
