'Curious' Dog Lights Stove, Starts Fire in Colorado Home

The Colorado Springs Fire Department on Tuesday released a home surveillance video that showed who was responsible for starting a house fire last week — the family dog .

Firefighters responded to a report of a fire at a house on the 1600 block of Rushmore Drive at around 4:43 a.m. on June 26. The caller said a fire had broken out above the stove, but the homeowner managed to extinguish it.

When firefighters arrived, there was no visible fire or smoke, and although there wasn't an active fire, there was evidence of one. The male homeowner who extinguished the fire was transported to a hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation. There were no other injuries "to people or pets," fire officials said.

"After talking to the homeowners and looking through their home security footage, we determined their pup got a bit curious and accidentally switched on the oven which had some boxes on top of it," the fire department wrote alongside the video on Facebook.

In the video, the dog can be seen perched on its hind legs, nosing around the stovetop. The pup's paw had turned a knob, and the glow of a flame can be seen as the dog walks away. Another clip shows a wall of flames burning in the smoke-filled house.

The homeowners were awoken by a "High Heat" alert from their Apple HomePod.

"This is a good reminder to always have working smoke alarms inside and outside every sleeping area and on every floor of the home, ensure all combustibles are away from your stovetop/oven, and know two ways out of every room in your home in the event of a fire," the fire department said.
