(COLORADO SPRINGS) — The Colorado Springs Fire Department (CSFD) said on Wednesday, July 17 that fire crews along with Animal Law Enforcement (ALE) rescued a dog that was found in a hot car.

According to CSFD, on Wednesday a fire crew was called to help ALE with a dog left in a hot car, possibly for an hour and 45 minutes. With CSFD’s help, the dog was able to be rescued from the car and ALE was able to get medical care for the pup with the Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region (HSPPR).

The dog was heavily panting, very hot, and showed signs of heatstroke. The owner was eventually cited, according to CSFD. HSPPR said the dog named Bella is now back home with her family and the owner is facing charges of Animal Cruelty.

CSFD said it was 82 degrees on July 17 and after an hour of sitting in the sun, the internal temperature of the car would be well into the 130-degree mark. CSFD said to never leave pets or kids in the car.
