Hiker Rescued after 600-foot Fall on Colorado's Mount Massive

A hiker has been rescued on Mount Massive, Colorado's second highest peak.

The fall occurred June 22 on the southwest slopes of the mountain. The hiker had fallen while crossing a snow slope.

A rescue call was placed with a satellite device. Although most satellite communications devices include location information, this device apparently didn't.

A Lake County search and rescue (SAR) team hiked roughly 4 miles in to the victim. The found the hiker at about 12,300 feet.

The hiker was able to walk out on his own.

We all need to heed Lake County's credo:

"This is a great reminder of how high angle snow fields are very common on the peaks during early summer conditions. Ensure to bring traction devices such as microspikes, and an ice axe in order to self-arrest in case of a slide."

    Thank you, Lake County SAR.
