Republican Greg Lopez wins Colorado special election for Ken Buck’s seat

Republican candidate Greg Lopez has won the special election to carry out the remainder of former Rep. Ken Buck’s (R-Colo.) term in Congress, according to Decision Desk HQ.

Lopez, a former mayor of Parker, Colo., defeated Democrat Trisha Calvarese, who’s previously worked at the AFL-CIO and National Science Foundation, in the race to represent Colorado’s eastern 4th Congressional District until early January. November’s election will decide who takes Buck’s seat for the next full term.

Lopez and Calvarese were chosen to run for the special election by their respective parties, vying to replace Buck, who announced this year he was retiring before the end of his term.

Lopez only ran for the special election to replace Buck and not the GOP primary for the two-year term, meaning he’ll only be doing a temporary stint in Congress. The primary for November’s election is also being held on Tuesday.

Lopez was seen as the likely victor given that former President Trump won the district in 2020 by 19 points.
