Five people were taken to hospital after escaping a hot, acidic pond at Yellowstone National Park .

The group had been in an SUV that went off-road and plunged into an inactive geyser on Thursday morning, according to park officials. "On Thursday, July 11 at about 10:40 a.m. a car with five occupants inadvertently drove off the roadway and into the Semi-Centennial Geyser thermal feature near Roaring Mountain between Mammoth Hot Springs and Norris Junction in Yellowstone National Park," park spokesperson Morgan Warthin said in a statement.

The passengers, whose names have not been released, were able to climb out of the 105-degree Fahrenheit acidic water by themselves. All five passengers were taken via ambulance to a nearby hospital, Warthin said.

They were all treated for non-life-threatening injuries. Following the incident, law enforcement rangers closed both lanes of the roadway near the accident as they worked to safely lift the car out of the thermal pond.

It took about two hours to extract the SUV, which had been submerged in around 9 feet of water. The incident is currently under investigation, park officials confirmed.

Warthin thanked those involved in the operation to remove the vehicle. "Yellowstone National Park would like to thank Hanser’s Automotive; US Water Rescue Dive Team; HK, Contractors; Resource Technologies Incorporated and Yellowstone Park Service Stations for their collective expertise and professionalism in removing the car from the thermal feature in such an expeditious manner," the statement said.

The Semi-Centennial Geyser has been inactive since a major eruption in 1922. It is located near Roaring Mountain between Mammoth Hot Springs and Norris Junction.

Dangerous accidents aren't uncommon at Yellowstone. Last month an 83-year-old woman was gored by a bison and sustained serious injuries at the park.

The woman from Greenville, South Carolina was near the Storm Point Trail at Yellowstone Lake when she was attacked by a bison. It came within a few feet of the woman and lifted her about a foot off the ground with its horns, Yellowstone National Park officials said in a statement.

She was transported to the nearby Lake Medical Clinic for treatment before she was airlifted to Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center in Idaho Falls, Idaho. Last year, a woman was also mauled to death by a grizzly bear near Yellowstone.

Amie Adamson, 47, of Derby, Kansas, was found on Buttermilk Trail west of West Yellowstone, Montana, on July 22, 2023. Authorities said grizzly bear tracks were found at the scene.
