Colorado political leaders at odds over Trump assassination attempt

Saturday's attempted assassination of former President Trump is sowing division among Colorado's elected officials, even those on the same side of the aisle.

Why it matters: As tensions reach a boiling point, Colorado politicians appear to be adding fuel to the fire.

The latest: Numerous top Colorado Democrats, including U.S. Sens. Michael Bennet and John Hickenlooper, as well as Gov. Jared Polis , reacted with unified calls condemning political violence and sending well wishes for Trump's recovery.

Yes, but: Others, including Republican U.S. Rep. Lauren Boebert and state Rep. Matt Soper (R-Delta), blamed President Biden for the shooting after he reportedly said on a private call last week "we're done talking about the debate, it's time to put Trump in a bullseye."

What they're saying: "I do believe that Joe Biden is responsible for the shooting," Boebert told 9News' Kyle Clark on Saturday night.

    • Biden "should be prosecuted for criminal incitement of violence and solicitation of murder," Soper wrote on X.

The other side: One state Democrat, Rep. Steven Woodrow of Denver, was condemned by party leaders for a post he wrote on X that read: "The last thing America needed was sympathy for the devil but here we are."

    • Woodrow deleted his X account shortly after. Some people and groups online are now calling for his resignation, including Libs of TikTok , a popular far-right social media account.

The intrigue: In the aftermath of the assassination attempt, Colorado's governor took to social media to demand Biden "immediately provide" Secret Service protection for independent candidate Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., who says he's been denied protection by the Biden administration.

    • A bipartisan pair of House members said Sunday they plan to introduce a bill to enhance Secret Service protections for Biden , Trump and Kennedy.
    • Kennedy is scheduled to headline an Independent National Convention in September in Denver.
