Greenfield woman arrested in car theft investigation
GREENFIELD, MA (FRANKLIN COUNTY NOW) — On Tuesday, a Greenfield woman was arrested for her alleged involvement in a three-person South Windsor, Connecticut car theft that took place in April of 2023. Yanassis Ruiz, 24, of Greenfield was charged with conspiracy to commit larceny of a motor vehicle and failure to appear in the 2nd degree.

World War II was the last time Mass. residents could set off their own fireworks
While it used to have the company of a few other states, Massachusetts is now the only U.S. state with a full ban on consumer fireworks. In the Bay State, private citizens cannot possess, sell or use fireworks of any kind, including sparklers and firecrackers. According to CBS News, the state’s ban has existed since 1943, meaning World War II was the last time Massachusetts residents were able to use fireworks for personal displays.
Mass. astronaut continues orbiting space due to spaceship malfunctions
One of the NASA astronauts who’s been orbiting space for weeks due to several malfunctions on her spaceship is a Massachusetts native. Although Sunita L. Williams was born in Ohio, Williams considers Needham her hometown and graduated from the town’s high school in 1983, according to her NASA biography. In 2019, Needham renamed an elementary school after Williams to honor her aerospace career, MassLive previously reported. It was also the first time a school in Needham was named after a woman of color.

Gill, MA Pursuing New Composting Program
A new community composting plan was approved by the Selectboard, beginning the process of getting a weekly compost collection program off the ground for Gill residents as a prior food waste pickup system is phased out. A “composting coop” will be located near the electric vehicle charging stations in the parking lot of the Riverside Municipal Building on Route 2. Residents who wish to use the site to drop off 5-gallon pails of food waste can sign up to receive a padlock code to access the enclosure once sign-up becomes available. The placement of the composting coop away from homes, with wood shavings placed on the ground, is designed to alleviate odor from the food waste.

Massachusetts has 33 contested state legislative primaries on September 3, 2024, the fewest since Ballotpedia started tracking in 2010. There are 27 contested Democratic primaries and six contested Republican primaries. For both parties that is below the average from 2010 to 2022. The average number of contested Democratic primaries was 36.9 and the average number of contested Republican primaries was 8.3.
Vermont Police ask public for help locating a missing 18-year-old in Windham County
Grafton, VT- Police are searching for an 18-year-old male who was last seen yesterday afternoon in the Brookline Road area. Officers say that Ethan Whitten, 18, from Grafton, was last spotted on July 3rd at 3:00pm. Troopers from Westminster Barracks say that they were notified of Whitten’s disappearance at 10:11pm on Route 121 E.
