Swamp Sounds: Local group among diverse music acts coming to Black Swamp Arts Festival
BOWLING GREEN — Carmen Cano loves Bowling Green and the coming of the Black Swamp Arts Festival is one of her favorite times of the year. “Last year we started doing the interactive sculptures that people can help build and this year were doing that again,” said Cano, who is once again one of the 31-year-old festival’s marketing chairs. “A lot of our juried artists from last year will return this year, there will be a couple new food vendors out on the main strip.” Cano is especially excited about the music lineup at this year’s festival, which begins Friday and includes both national and local acts. “We have a couple really good bands this year,” said Cano. “I’ve heard really good things about Daniel Donato. I’m not really a big country music fan, but just listening to his stuff, I thought it was really cool. It kind of gives me that old school rock ‘n’ roll vibe.”

Breakfast matches lunch quality at Harvest
Harvest, in Holland, is a bit of a trek for those coming from Toledo, but the drive is definitely worth it. Formerly called Garden Harvest Market, the deli serves up sandwiches, wraps, breakfast, and more, along with a massive selection of craft beers, wine, mead, and cider. On our first visit, I went with the corned beef ciabatta ($12.99), which is a lot like a Reuben on ciabatta bread, with Swiss cheese, peppered Russian coleslaw, sweet onion, and Russian dressing. It was great. The only real complaint I had was it came out very hot, so I couldn’t eat it as fast as I wanted to. There was plenty of Russian dressing, and the coleslaw and sweet onion paired nicely with the corned beef round. My dining companion went with the Buffalo chicken wrap ($9.99), with Buffalo chicken salad, mixed greens, tomato, and sweet onions in a jalapeno-cheddar wrap. It was loaded with chicken, tasted great, and wrapped up nicely, making it one of the more portable offerings for people who need to lunch on the go.

Sylvania Community Orchestra kicks off new young artist competition
Some kids dream about playing with or in a symphony orchestra, and the Sylvania Community Orchestra likes to give them that chance, says volunteer Patty Bringolf. “In the past, we’ve accompanied several different piano players who have been age 8, age 16, young adults, and it’s just been such a positive experience for us as an orchestra, and we hope it’s been a positive, helpful experience to our students to get to play with a live orchestra,” she said. So the orchestra is launching its first Young Artists Solo Competition, which gives young musicians an extra chance.
