LIBERTY CENTER, Ohio — Waylon Rentz rushed for 177 yards and a pair of touchdowns to lead Liberty Center to a 31-6 victory Friday over Henry County rival Napoleon. The Tigers (2-0) blanked the Wildcats 25-0 in the second half. Garrison Kruse also scored two rushing touchdowns. Owen Espinoza went 11-of-25 for 171 yards and a touchdown for the Wildcats (1-1).

Running back Justin Pegues, who was previously at Tennessee Tech, caught the kickoff in the end zone and took 12 seconds to run it all the way to the other end of the field.

A half-hour delay due to high field temperatures did not ruin Anthony Wayne’s night. Once the festivities got underway at Lyden Field, the Generals advanced, whether by land or air, turning the game into a 48-minute torture chamber for St. John’s Jesuit. Grant Kinnee threw for two touchdowns and ran for two, Braden Gardner caught two touchdown passes and ran for another, and Anthony Wayne rolled past the host Titans 34-0. “Braden and Grant get a lot of credit because they’re the two back there,” AW coach Andy Brungard said, “but we’re trying to be a well-balanced offense.”

Anthony Wayne pulls away from St. Ursula in matchup of volleyball powerhouses
In what served as an early measuring stick for two of the top volleyball programs in northwest Ohio, visiting Anthony Wayne knocked off St. Ursula 3-1 in an action-packed match Thursday. The Generals won the first set 27-25 and the second set 25-17 before St. Ursula took the third set 25-23. AW then pulled away late in the fourth set, taking it 25-14. Anthony Wayne remained undefeated (5-0) and avenged a loss to the Arrows early last season. St. Ursula, which reached the state final four last season, fell to 4-3 in the early going. AW junior sisters Leah Pike (middle hitter) and Mallory Pike (outside hitter) took control at different points. Leah had 17 kills and Mallory had 14. Sophomore hitter Charley Gardner, who had 11 kills, also chipped in at crucial moments.
Maumee football cruises past Bryan, improves to 2-0
BRYAN — A dominating performance on Friday helped Maumee’s football team get off to its best start to a season in seven years. The Panthers scored three touchdowns in a three-minute span late in the first quarter and early in the second, led 49-14 at halftime, and cruised past Bryan 56-14 in a nonconference game at Golden Bear Stadium in Bryan. After going 1-48 from 2018 to 2022 and 5-5 last year, Maumee improved to 2-0 for the first time since 2017. “It’s good for our confidence, but we play at a week-by-week basis. Not too long ago, we were [1-48] and we remember that, remember how much work it took for us to get to where we are today,” second-year Maumee coach Evan Karchner said. “We just need to focus on getting better every week, and I think the wins will take care of itself.”
Maumee Girls Stand Tough Against Competition
BY JEREMY SCHNEIDER | MIRROR SPORTS — For Jeremiah McNutt and his Maumee girls soccer team, it’s not about where they start but where they end up. The Panthers went 1-2 last week, picking up a 3-0 win against Rossford before losing road games at Notre Dame Academy (6-0) and Wapakoneta (2-0). Both of those teams finished last season ranked inside the top 10 in Northwest Ohio.
Women’s cross country: Bronze for the Orange and Brown in season opener.
The Bowling Green’s women’s cross-country team began their 2024 season on Friday at Akron’s Tommy Evans Invitational. Placing 3rd as a team, the Falcons were led by familiar faces in Graduate Student Kailee Perry (2nd overall) and Junior Kylee Cubbison (7th overall) and Junior Regina Rosa 19012 (27th). Sophomore Rachel Withrow followed up with a 37th-place finish and Madison Foster’s 40th-place finish rounded out scoring for the Falcons.

Bowling Green got its 2024 season started off with a considerable bang as Falcons running back Justin Pegues returned the opening kickoff of Bowling Green's Thursday night game against Fordham 100 yards for a touchdown. Pegues also set a school record for the longest kick return in program history in the process. Also of note is the fact that this was the first time Pegues touched the ball in a Bowling Green uniform after transferring in from Tennessee Tech.
Soccer Game Recap: Archbold Gets the Win
After having lost a blowout in their previous game against Wauseon, Archbold was happy to have turned things around on Saturday. They never let the Pettisville Blackbirds onto the board and left with a 5-0 victory. The high-scoring effort was just what the Blue Streaks needed considering they were shutout in their previous contest.
