Dr. Shane Bassett, Colton School District’s new high school principal, was in the district last week. He toured the high school, met the school’s administrative staff, and had informative discussions with teachers.

According to his bio, Dr. Bassett has 27 years of experience in education as a teacher, principal and K-12 director of federal programs. He has a positive track record of success with implementing comprehensive and continuous school improvement plans.

Bassett said that he is committed to building a positive and collaborative setting with the high school staff, students, parents, district leaders and the Colton community to support the academic achievement, safety, social development and the life-readiness programs in the high school learning community.

He said he wants the community to see the school as an educational destination that attracts students by proactively providing a range of options for students whether they plan to go to college or universities, into trades or apprenticeships, or business and entrepreneurship.

“There is a lot of change happening at the high school this year and we will be guiding the process helping staff, students and families feel supported during the changes. The district's vision is to have all our graduates life-ready and on their way to success,” Bassett said.

Colton High has several open teaching positions. The process for new hires is moving forward.

According to school district Superintendent Dave Kline, a shop teacher with 27 years of experience and a strong background in shop education has been added to the CHS staff along with a new science teacher.

Kline said more interviews are still to be completed as the high school looks to fill its teaching positions.

Bassett said he would be meeting with new staff members to form a strong alignment so our “ship is sailing smoothly.”

The new principal was born and raised in Massachusetts but has lived in the Portland area for 31 years. He earned his Bachelor’s in elementary education and social studies from Concordia University, a Master’s in curriculum and instruction from the University of Portland and a Doctorate in educational leadership from George Fox University.

Until recently, Dr. Bassett has been serving as the middle school principal of an elite United States embassy-affiliated international school in Paraguay.

He is married, has three children and is excited to reunite with his extended family in Oregon.

They are presently staying in Sandy until his home in Gresham is available. Dr. Bassett said the drive to Colton is beautiful with the winding roads and the countryside filled with beautiful trees and when you enter Colton the small-town feel is real. And as he meets people from the community, he knows he is in a good school district.
